Puerto Rico Shopping Tours
Malls, outlets, discount stores and local markets, built around your shopping day. Shared or private, your call.
Shop Like a Local, Your Way
Puerto Rico is one of the best shopping destinations in the Caribbean, and most visitors never see past the old town. We take you where Puerto Ricans actually shop: the biggest malls, the Barceloneta outlets, the discount stores and the local markets.
I am a local captain and tour operator, and I know which stores are worth your time and when to go. You choose the stops, and we handle the driving, the parking and the bags.
Plenty of visitors go straight to the mall and never meet the local vendor just down the road selling things you will not find inside any store. If you want the mall, we take you there, and The Mall of San Juan has it all, from Coach to Rolex. If you want what locals actually know about, we take you there too.

Looking for Something Specific?
Not every shopper wants the mall. Some visitors are looking for one thing: a bottle of rum you cannot find back home, a specific cigar, a piece of handmade jewelry, or a local artist’s work. Puerto Rico has it all, you just need to know where to look.
- Rum and local spirits: from the well known distillery gift shops to small batch bottles made in Puerto Rico and only sold on the island. Ask your driver, we know which shops actually stock the harder to find labels.
- Cigars and tobacco: hand rolled right in front of you in Old San Juan tobacco shops, using leaf grown on the island. A good stop to pair with a rum tasting.
- Jewelry, from fine to handmade: want a serious piece, gold, diamonds, a real investment? We know the trusted jewelers, not just the mall kiosks. Want something handmade and one of a kind instead? We take you to local designers and artisan studios.
- A real local plaza or market: not every visitor wants a mall. If you want to walk a real Puerto Rican plaza del mercado, meet a specific artisan, or catch a pulguero that is only open one or two days a week, tell us and we build the day around it. See the Markets and Pulgueros section below.
- Puerto Rican art and crafts: paintings, prints and handmade goods from local artists, many of them in Old San Juan storefronts
- Discount and off price stores: Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Ross and Burlington, all carrying name brands at a lower price
- Thrift and secondhand stores: Goodwill opened its first Puerto Rico stores in 2025 and 2026, with locations in Carolina (Plaza Escorial) and Manati (Los Colobos). The Salvation Army runs one of its largest island stores in Old San Juan near Bahia Urbana. Santurce and Rio Piedras also have local vintage and secondhand shops such as Electroshock, De Vuelta Thrift Shop and Embeleco
Tell us what you are hunting for and we build the stops around it. This is where White Glove Shopping works best, since your driver can take you straight to the right shop instead of searching on your own.
Markets and Pulgueros
If you want to shop the way locals do, skip the mall for a day and try one of the island’s weekend markets and flea markets (“pulgueros”). Expect handmade goods, fresh produce, street food and real bargains. Hours shift often, so we confirm the day’s schedule before we build it into your route.
Arecibo Flea Market
One of the island’s largest pulgueros: clothing, music, jewelry and plenty of pinchos. Usually runs Friday through Sunday evenings.
Bayamon Flea Market
A weekend pulguero with everyday finds and bargain clothing. Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Old San Juan Farmers Market
Local produce and coffee near El Morro. Typically a Saturday morning market.
El Mercado Urbano
A monthly Sunday market on Ashford Avenue with dozens of local vendors, crafts and food.
Plaza del Mercado de Rio Piedras
A traditional market hall with produce, local food stalls and everyday shopping, open most days.
Plaza del Mercado de Santurce
Market by day, known for its lively food and drink scene by night.
Market days and hours change, and some are monthly rather than weekly. Tell us when you are visiting and we will confirm what is open that day.
Shopping Tips Nobody Tells You
- No customs on the way home: Flying from Puerto Rico to anywhere in the US mainland is a domestic flight. There is no customs stop and no duty on what you buy here, since Puerto Rico is US soil.
- Tax is already in the price: Puerto Rico’s sales tax (IVU) is 11.5 percent, higher than almost every US state, but it shows up at checkout just like sales tax anywhere else. No surprise bill later.
- One thing customs does check: fresh fruit, plants and some agricultural products are inspected by USDA before you fly back to the mainland. Rum, clothes, jewelry and electronics are not a problem.
- Packing rum or spirits: bottles over 3.4 oz cannot go in a carry-on. Pack them in your checked bag, wrapped well, or ask your driver about shipping options for larger purchases.
- Bring cash for the markets: malls and outlets take cards everywhere, but pulgueros and local markets are often cash-only or cash-preferred.
- Go early if you hate crowds: weekday mornings are the quietest time at the big malls and outlets. Weekends and the days around holidays get busy fast.
Which Shopping Day Fits You
- First time in Puerto Rico and want the big brands: The Mall of San Juan, Plaza Las Americas and Premium Outlets Barceloneta.
- Shopping for bargains: Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Ross, Burlington and the outlets.
- Want something local and different: Plaza del Mercado de Rio Piedras, Old San Juan art shops and the neighborhood boutiques, followed by lunch at a local spot.
- Looking for something specific, like rum, cigars or handmade jewelry: White Glove Shopping, built around your list.
- Traveling with friends or a group: the Shared tour is the best value.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is winter clothing so cheap at Puerto Rico outlets and malls?
Puerto Rico is tropical, so almost nobody here buys coats, sweaters or boots. Stores still stock them for visitors and for shipping north, and they rarely sell at full price. If you are hunting for a winter coat, a wool sweater or snow boots, the outlet racks and the discount stores are often the cheapest place on the island to find one, deeply marked down.
Which is the fancy mall in San Juan for designer brands?
The Mall of San Juan is the island’s luxury mall, with Louis Vuitton, BOSS and other designer names. Plaza Las Americas is the biggest overall, with over 300 stores from Macy’s to JCPenney. Puerto Rico Premium Outlets in Barceloneta has the same big brands at outlet prices, about 50 minutes from San Juan.
Do I pay customs or duty on what I buy in Puerto Rico?
No. Flying from Puerto Rico to anywhere in the US mainland is a domestic flight, since Puerto Rico is US soil. There is no customs stop and no duty on your purchases. The one exception is fresh produce and some agricultural products, which get a USDA inspection before you fly back. Clothes, electronics, jewelry and rum are not a problem.
What is the sales tax in Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico’s sales and use tax (IVU) is 11.5 percent, combining a 10.5 percent commonwealth rate and a 1 percent municipal rate. It shows up at checkout like sales tax anywhere else in the US, so the price you see is close to the price you pay.
Should I book the shared tour or a private White Glove day?
The shared tour is the best value if you are happy shopping on a fixed route and schedule, especially with friends or a group. White Glove is a private van and driver on the route you build yourself, with your bags carried for you. It is the better choice if you are hunting for something specific, traveling with a larger group, or just want your own schedule.
Can I bring rum or other spirits home in my luggage?
Yes. Bottles over 3.4 oz cannot travel in a carry-on under TSA rules, so pack them well in your checked bag. For a large haul, ask your driver about shipping options.
