El Yunque Rainforest: Go on Your Own or Book a Tour?
The only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System is under an hour from San Juan. Here is how to visit and which tours are worth it.

El Yunque National Forest sits in the mountains above Río Grande, east of San Juan. People come for the waterfalls, river pools, natural rock slides and short hikes through the forest. You can drive yourself, but there is no public transportation, trails are easy to miss, and the best swimming spots are outside the main recreation area. That is why most first-time visitors go with a guide.

Good to know before you go
- El Yunque is roughly 45 minutes to an hour east of San Juan by car, depending on traffic and where you start.
- Entry rules for the main recreation area have changed several times in recent years. Check the US Forest Service page for El Yunque before you drive out.
- There is no public transportation to the forest, and ride-share drivers rarely wait there. Without a car, pick a tour that includes transportation.
- It rains most days, usually in short bursts. Bring water shoes, a towel and a change of clothes.
- Tours marked "self drive" mean you meet the guide near the forest in your own car.
Which one fits your trip?
- You have a rental car and want a low price: the Self Drive tour, where you meet the guide there, or the small-group Waterslides Tour.
- No car, staying in San Juan: the Waterslides and Beach Tour with Transport, or the EZ Going Bus Tour.
- Travelling with someone who uses a wheelchair or cannot hike: the EZ Going Bus Tour is listed as wheelchair-accessible.
