Most visitors never leave the coast. Inland, the karst hills around Arecibo and Utuado hide river caves you can float, hike and kayak through. Orocovis, in the central mountains, is the zipline capital. On the south coast, Ponce has the island’s best-preserved historic center outside San Juan.
There are far fewer bookable tours here than on the coast, so we have grouped the three areas on one page. Every tour below has open dates.

Good to know before you go
- Arecibo is about an hour west of San Juan. Utuado and the central mountains take longer than the map suggests, because the roads are narrow and winding.
- River and cave tours depend on water levels and are often cancelled after heavy rain. Keep a flexible day in your plan.
- Cell signal drops in the mountains. Download your maps before you leave.
- Ponce is about an hour and a half south of San Juan on the highway and works as a day trip.
- Most of these tours have age, weight or fitness limits. Read the listing before you book.
