Fajardo, about an hour east of San Juan, is Puerto Rico’s boating capital. Its marinas are the departure point for snorkeling trips to Icacos and Palomino, full-day runs to Culebra, private charters and fishing. After sunset, kayak tours head into Laguna Grande, the bioluminescent lagoon in Las Croabas. Luquillo, with its beach and food kiosks, is on the way.

Good to know before you go
- Fajardo is about an hour to an hour and a quarter from San Juan by car. Most boats leave in the morning, so plan to be on the road early.
- Getting an Uber back to San Juan at night is unreliable. For the bio bay, drive yourself or book a tour or transfer that includes the return.
- The lagoon glows best on dark nights. Around the full moon the effect is weaker, so check the moon phase before you pick a date.
- Private charters are usually priced per boat, not per person. Split among a group they can cost less than they look.
- The public ferry to Vieques and Culebra leaves from Ceiba, a short drive south of Fajardo.
