Old San Juan Tours: Walking, Forts, Food and Rum

Five centuries of history inside seven square blocks. Here is how to see it with a guide, and which tour fits the time you have.

Destinations › Old San Juan

Old San Juan is the walled colonial city at the tip of the San Juan islet. It holds the two Spanish forts, El Morro and San Cristóbal, plus the blue cobblestone streets, the city gate and most of the restaurants and bars visitors come for. You can walk it on your own, but a good guide turns the forts and plazas into a story, and a food tour gets you to the places locals actually eat.

Good to know before you go

  • The old city is small and walkable, but it is hilly and the cobblestones get slippery when wet. Wear real shoes, not flip-flops.
  • El Morro and San Cristóbal are run by the National Park Service as San Juan National Historic Site. Check whether your tour includes the entrance fee.
  • The cruise piers sit at the edge of the old city, so most walking tours start within a short walk of the ship.
  • Parking is tight. Use one of the public garages, or come by Uber or taxi.
  • Mid-day sun is strong and there is little shade at the forts. Morning or sunset tours are more comfortable.

Which one fits your trip?

  • Staying outside the old city and want a ride in: the Historical Walk, Shopping and Dining tour includes transport.
  • You would rather not walk the hills: the UTV tour covers the old city on wheels. It is priced per vehicle.
