Vieques and Culebra: How to Get There and What to Book
Two small islands off the east coast with the beaches and the bio bay people fly to Puerto Rico for. Here is the practical way to do them.

Culebra is the beach island, home to Flamenco Beach and some of the best snorkeling in Puerto Rico. Vieques is bigger and wilder, with Mosquito Bay, widely described as the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world, plus black sand beaches and free-roaming horses.
There are two ways to see them. The simple one is a day trip by boat from Fajardo, which covers Culebra’s reefs and beaches with lunch included. The other is to go on your own by ferry from Ceiba or by small plane, and book activities once you are there. For the Vieques bio bay you need the second option, because tours run after dark.

Good to know before you go
- Ferries to both islands leave from Ceiba. Tickets sell out on weekends and holidays, so buy them ahead of time.
- Bio bay tours that start on Vieques run at night, so plan to sleep on the island. A few boat tours include the bio bay in one trip; check the departure point and return time on the calendar.
- Darker nights around the new moon give the brightest glow in Mosquito Bay.
- A boat day trip from Fajardo is the least complicated way to see Culebra: no ferry tickets, no island taxi, lunch and snorkel gear included.
- You will want a rental vehicle on Vieques. Reserve it before you arrive.
Which one fits your trip?

- The bio bay is the reason for your trip: stay a night on Vieques and book a clear-bottom kayak tour, or look at the boat tour that includes the bio bay.
