Fishing Charters in Puerto Rico: Compared

Six private fishing charters in San Juan, Fajardo, Vieques and Rincón, with real prices per boat, trip length and a booking calendar for each one.

Puerto Rico fishing starts close to shore. The seabed drops off a few miles out of San Juan, so a half-day charter reaches deep water without a long run. I am a boat captain in Carolina and I get asked every week who to go fishing with. These are the fishing charters in Puerto Rico you can book online, with the price for the whole boat and where each one leaves from.

Which fishing charter fits your trip

  • Staying in San Juan with one free morning: Castillo Tours leaves from San Juan Bay Marina, so there is no drive.
  • Staying in Fajardo, Luquillo or Río Grande: KonKlma Fishing Charters has the lowest price on the east coast and a 5.0 rating.
  • A full day offshore from the east coast: Island Reef Tours, seven hours.
  • Already in Vieques: Salty Spirit runs inshore and offshore trips from Esperanza.
  • West coast and serious about marlin: Fathom Charters in Rincón, eight hours.
  • Lowest price, relaxed day: Great Escape PR in Rincón combines fishing and sailing from $750.
Need a ride to the marina? Fajardo is about one hour from San Juan and Rincón about two and a half. You can book a private driver or transfer here.
Prices are the starting price for the boat on each operator's booking calendar. Tax, fees and crew tip are usually extra, and prices change by date and trip length. Trips depend on sea conditions.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a fishing charter cost in Puerto Rico?

Private charters are priced per boat, not per person. Half-day trips of about four hours start around $750 to $975. Full-day offshore trips run about $1,400 to $1,900. Most boats take up to six people, so a group of six pays roughly $125 to $320 each.

Where do fishing charters leave from?

From San Juan Bay for visitors staying in the city, from the marinas in Fajardo on the east coast, from Esperanza in Vieques, and from Rincón on the west coast. Pick the one closest to where you are staying.

What can you catch in Puerto Rico?

Offshore: blue marlin, mahi-mahi, wahoo and tuna. Inshore and in the lagoons: tarpon, snook and jacks. What is biting depends on the month, so ask the captain when you book.

When is the best time for fishing in Puerto Rico?

There is fishing all year. Blue marlin are a summer and early fall fish, mahi-mahi and wahoo are stronger in the cooler months, and tarpon are caught year-round in the lagoons around San Juan.

How many people fit on a fishing charter?

Most charter boats in Puerto Rico carry a maximum of six passengers. Larger groups need a second boat.

Do I need experience or my own gear?

No. Rods, tackle and bait are normally provided and the crew shows you what to do. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and something for seasickness if you are not used to open water.

Can kids go fishing?

Yes on most boats. Some trips take all ages and others start at 6 or 8. A four-hour inshore trip is easier on children than a full day offshore.
