Snorkeling in Puerto Rico: Tours Compared

Eleven snorkeling tours in San Juan, Fajardo, Culebra and Rincón, with real prices, durations and review counts, and a booking calendar for each one.

Puerto Rico snorkeling comes in three kinds. In San Juan you snorkel from shore or in a lagoon, in one or two hours, without a car. From Fajardo you take a boat to Cayo Icacos for a half day of clear water and white sand. And if you want turtles and the best reef, you give Culebra a full day. I run a boat out of Carolina and see these operators on the water every week. Below are the snorkeling tours you can book online today, grouped by where they leave from.

Which snorkeling tour fits your trip

  • Two free hours in San Juan, or a cruise stop: VIP Adventures in Condado Lagoon. It is the lowest price and you can walk or take a short ride there.
  • You want to see turtles without leaving San Juan: Sea Adventures of PR, for ages 10 and up.
  • Family with small children: Caribe Bliss to Icacos takes ages 3 and up and includes lunch. Snorkel and Beach Tours is the shorter, cheaper Icacos trip.
  • A big day out with slides and a BBQ: East Island Excursions or Snorkeling Puerto Rico.
  • Largest group size on a shared boat: Casa Del Mar takes up to 35 people on its snorkel and beach day trip from Isleta Marina in Fajardo.
  • The best reef and Flamenco Beach: a Culebra day trip. Kayaking Puerto Rico costs less and uses the ferry; Sail Getaways goes direct by boat.
  • First time snorkeling, or not a strong swimmer: Rincon Diving & Snorkeling in the west, or a calm-water lagoon tour in San Juan.
  • Lowest price with some exercise: Pirate Snorkeling Shack, where you kayak to the reef.
Prices are the starting price per person on each operator's booking calendar and can change by date. Boat trips depend on sea conditions, and operators reschedule or refund when the Coast Guard closes the port or the swell is too high.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best snorkeling in Puerto Rico?

The clearest water and healthiest reefs are off the east coast: Cayo Icacos, Culebra and Vieques. In the west, Rincón and La Parguera are good. Around San Juan you can snorkel in Condado Lagoon and at Escambrón, which are easy to reach but less colorful than the islands.

Can you snorkel in San Juan?

Yes. Guided snorkeling tours run in Condado Lagoon and at the Escambrón marine park, both a short ride from the hotels and the cruise piers. They last one to two hours, so they fit a half day.

How much does a snorkeling tour cost in Puerto Rico?

Guided shore and lagoon tours in San Juan start around $50 per person. Half-day boat trips to Icacos run about $85 to $105 with drinks or lunch. Full-day trips to Culebra cost about $110 to $165.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Not always. Calm-water tours give you a flotation vest and stay in shallow water, and some are designed for non-swimmers. Open-water boat trips expect you to be comfortable in deep water. Check the booking page for each tour.

Is Icacos or Culebra better for snorkeling?

Icacos is 20 to 30 minutes from Fajardo by boat and works as a half day. Culebra has more reef and sea turtles, but it is a full day with a longer crossing or a ferry.

Is snorkel gear included?

On guided tours, mask, snorkel and fins are normally included, along with a flotation vest. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a towel and water shoes.

What is the best time of year to snorkel?

You can snorkel all year. The sea is usually calmest from April through August. In winter the north and west coasts get surf, so the east coast islands and the lagoons are the safer choice.
