La Parguera, in the southwestern town of Lajas, is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from San Juan, and one of the more underrated stops in Puerto Rico for exactly that reason. It sees a fraction of the crowds of the east-coast attractions while offering one of the island’s best bioluminescent bays.
The Bioluminescent Bay
La Parguera’s bay is one of only a handful of bioluminescent bays in the world, and one of three in Puerto Rico (along with Mosquito Bay in Vieques and Laguna Grande in Fajardo). Microorganisms in the water glow blue when disturbed by a paddle, a fin, or a boat wake, making a nighttime kayak or boat tour genuinely one of the more unusual things you can do on a Puerto Rico trip.
More Than Just the Bay
La Parguera is also known for some of the island’s best scuba diving, with a dramatic drop-off known as “The Wall.” The Malecón, a waterfront strip of souvenir shops and casual restaurants, is the spot for local food and a drink with a view. Boat charters can take you out to small mangrove islands like Caracoles, Mata la Gata, and Cayo Enrique, where sightings of sea turtles, dolphins, and even manatees aren’t unusual.
Planning Your Visit
Because the glow depends on darkness, tours run at night and moon phase matters: a new moon (darker sky) generally means a brighter, more visible glow. Most tours combine the bio bay with kayaking or a boat ride through the mangrove channels.
